5 Reasons to Go on a Kayaking Swamp Tour in New Orleans

It’s absolutely, unquestionably, EMPHATICALLY impossible for me to go on a trip anywhere and not experience some form of nature. Even in big city trips (e.g. Florence, Italy), we’ve taken day trips to get a taste of nature (vineyards and rolling hills of Tuscany!). This is just how I was raised. I feel that though you experience the culture through city via food and architecture, you get an in depth feel of the state or country by experiencing the nature. Since the USA has such a vast array of geographical features, it’d be silly to not get a taste of what it’s like outside of a concrete jungle. I decided to get a taste and experience Louisiana wildlife by going on a kayaking swamp tour in New Orleans (on my 25th birthday no less!).

Thanks to New Orleans Kayak Swamp Tours for inviting me and my gal pals! All opinions and ideas expressed here are my own.

Three of my best gal pals and I took the Manchac Swamp Kayak Tour. It was a perfect fit since our skills ranged from someone who had never set foot in a kayak to someone who kayaks multiple times a year. Don’t worry, we lumped the beginner and the expert in the kayak together, and they only ran into ONE tree (and didn’t capsize the kayak)! We had an absolute BLAST, and that’s why I’d love to share with you 5 reasons to go on a kayaking swamp tour in New Orleans!

1. Kayaking Through the New Orleans Swamp is Eco-Friendly!

The New Orleans Kayak Swamp Tours is one of the best swamp tours in New Orleans because it is extremely eco friendly.
Shout out to Joycelyn for steering while I panic.

For instance, you get a fabulous upper body workout in a kayak (to work off all those drinks and beignets!), instead of being stuck on an airboat swamp tour in New Orleans. I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase: “Take only pictures, leave only footsteps.” The motto of this company is “Take pictures, leave only paddle strokes”! This is one of the best swamp tours in New Orleans because they genuinely care about the environment and the wildlife living there. They don’t feed the alligators marshmallows to entice them to jump for the camera. They leave the WILDlife WILD, but will gladly point them out so you can take a peek yourself!

Another reason that makes the New Orleans Kayak Swamp Tours eco-friendly: carpooling! When booking your kayaking swamp tour, you can request transportation to the launch site. It’s only an extra $20, the pick up spot is easy to find, and really just relieves the stress of figuring out where to go (especially since there’s no specific address to the launch site). Another bonus of carpooling… you can make friends!

2. See the Beauty of Louisiana While Kayaking Through the New Orleans Swamp

The Manchac Kayak Swamp Tour is one of the best swamp tours in New Orleans because you get to see the beauty of Louisiana swamps and the beautiful cypress trees.

Do you know the difference between a bayou and a swamp? Technically, on this swamp tour in New Orleans, you’ll be kayaking through a bayou AND a swamp! A Bayou has a current flow (although very slow and “sluggish”), while swamp water is more stagnant. As i mentioned previously, I feel it’s crucial on any vacation to experience the nature of the place you’re visiting. Kayaking through the swamp gets you up close and personal to truly immerse yourself in your surroundings, which is why this is one of the best swamp tours in New Orleans.

Certainly these pictures of the New Orleans swamp and bayou should be enough to convince you right?

3. Kayak the New Orleans Swamp to get a Perfect Break from the City Life

A kayak swamp tour in New Orleans is the best addition to your New Orleans bucket list itinerary if you need to get a break from the city life.
100% most likely the spot where I got sunburned. In 70 degree weather.

New Orleans can get pretty wild (looking at you Bourbon Street). So, if you’re researching some of the best New Orleans tours to create the perfect NOLA bucket list itinerary, I’d highly recommend adding a kayaking swamp tour to balance out your itinerary. On the Manchac Swamp Kayak Tour, your tour guide at New Orleans Kayak Swamp Tours guides you away from the Louisiana interstate into the peaceful bliss of the swamp. Enjoy friendship, a good workout, and learn about the nature and beauty of Louisiana that’s surrounding you thanks to your swamp tour guide.

4. NOLA Swamp Tours Offer Peace and Serenity

Watch the Louisiana bayou change to a swamp and enjoy the peace and serenity on one of the best swamp tours in New Orleans, the Manchac Swamp Kayak Tour.

Another reason you absolutely need to go on a kayaking swamp tour in New Orleans is that the Manchac Swamp Kayak Tour is extremely peaceful and serene. This point goes hand in hand with my second point about the natural beauty of Louisiana, but I especially wanted to emphasize how peaceful it was the deeper you got in the New Orleans swamp. One of the reasons why New Orleans Kayak Swamp Tours is the best swamp tour in New Orleans is because their guides take you away from the highway on the kayaks, weaving around the trees and through weeds; something the airboat swamp tours cannot offer you! I loved looking at the beautiful cypress trees the deeper we got, and seeing the bayou transform into a swamp. I mentioned how peaceful the swamp seemed to our guide, with which he responded as that being one of his favorite parts of this tour. He mentioned, “The airboats just can’t get back here like we can with our kayaks.”

5. Experience Louisiana Wildlife

Experience the Louisiana Wildlife is one of five reasons you need to go on the best swamp tour in New Orleans: the Manchac Swamp Tour by New Orleans kayak Swamp Tours.

As mentioned in my first point, this swamp tour does NOT feed the alligators. You get to truly experience Louisiana wildlife exactly how it should be: in their natural habitat, doing their natural thing. (Which, for the northerners, is NOT eating you. Seriously, stop with this Hollywood nonsense). Similar to most wildlife, they like to be left alone. If you approach a squirrel, they will run away. While on NOLA swamp tour, the same concept goes for their gators. They’ll just swim away and disappear underwater. So really, no need to fret over the gators! It was absolutely amazing getting close wildlife while kayaking through the New Orleans swamp and bayou. On our swamp tour, even in the winter, we saw six alligators, 3 white egrets, one snake, and MANY little turtles basking in the sun.

Are you convinced? Because you should be!

  1. I have wanted to visit New Orleans for the past three years at least. Every year I say I’ll go for Mardi Gras and so far… well. Anyway, I’m definitely adding kayaing a swamp AND bayou to my list of things to do when I eventually visit. I didn’t realise that a swamp could be so beautiful!

    1. Mardis Gras time gets a little crazy!! But Mardis Gras “season” is practically a month, so even if you went the few weeks leading up to it, you could still see fun parades, eat tons of king cake. & I never imagined how gorgeous a swamp could look until I experienced it myself either!
